Unless Congress Takes Action, Access to Critical Wheelchair Components and Accessories Is About to Get Worse

HELP STOP MEDICARE CUTS TO COMPLEX REHAB TECHNOLOGY CRITICAL TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. Medicare is planning to cut funding on January 1, 2017 for complex rehab technology (CRT). Please contact your Members of Congress and tell them to protect access to CRT and pass H.R. 3229 and S. 2196 this year! Email your Members of Congress: www.protectmymobility.org or call your Members of Congress: 202-224-3121

Your help is needed to get Congress to stop major cuts in the reimbursement for complex rehab technology (CRT) items. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) tells beneficiaries that cuts in reimbursement are a good thing. After all, it reduces out-of-pocket expenses, and everybody wants that, right? Not necessarily. Here's why.

Consider any item you buy retail such as appliances, cars, cameras, or furniture. Imagine that the government took retail prices for all of the products in any of those categories and chose a median price of those items to set the price you can pay for any item in that category. Now, imagine the government asks sellers of those products to bid the lowest price they will accept for any of the items in that category. As a result, what was a median price of all of the products is now based on the lowest bid prices for the lowest cost item in the category. Now the maximum you can pay for any of the products in that category has dropped, maybe as much as 40%.

Imagine going shopping with this reduced amount of money to spend and attempting to buy a highly featured, quality-built product in that category. You may find that you are able to pay a fair price for the least expensive product on the market. You most likely will also find a large number of high quality, highly featured products unobtainable. But, you can still buy a product and the price for that product is a good price, right? Unfortunately, it isn't the product you need. I think you understand the problem. That is exactly what CMS did last year to the Medicare fee schedule for critical wheelchair components and accessories used on CRT manual wheelchairs and will be doing it for CRT power wheelchairs if Congress does not act this year.

Many stakeholders have been fighting to ensure access to wheelchair components and accessories used by people with disabilities who require individually prescribed products — products that will meet their specific needs — remains accessible.

Your help is needed to get the support of Congress to stop these cuts before the end of the year. Go to www.ProtectMyMobility.org and follow the easy-to-follow steps. It will only take a few minutes of your time, but your action is needed to be sure you or those you care about can obtain the technology they need beyond December 2016.

I am paralyzed from the waist down due to polio at the age of 6 months. I am 68 now and have been in a motorized wheel chair for 6 years. I invented a safety switch for a motorized wheel chair that would help a lot of people from getting hurt, I cannot sell it because of insurance will not pay for it. It's on utube, check it out and let me know what you think about it........photoelectric activated switch for a motorized wheel chair...THANK YOU

My son doesn't request a complex wheelchair because he "wants one" , he request it because he needs it to have any resemblance of a normal life. His complex medical issues cannot be dealt with using an off the shelf, one size fits all chair. Without his complex wheelchair he will be co fined to bed indefinitely. Please don't cut spending.C

My 26 year old son has cerebral palsy and I am also physically disabled. He has had such a tough life with not being able to participate and being "odd man out'". I want him to have pride and be as independent as he possibly can. Please don't stop this funding. His independence also helps me because I'm not able to transport him physically. If this funding is stopped... You can prepare to be paying more for "assisted living"... Which is going to cost a lot more in the long run.

I have been an amputee for close to 20 years, I was a pedestrian closed the back of my sons van doors, impaired driver came around the corner, about 25 mph, older model all medal, she pinned me, backed up did it 2 more times, 3 altogether, right leg went over trailer hitch, it died, other leg was iffy, all ribs broken, died twice, 3 blood tranfusions, all ribs broken punctured lungs, drowning in blood, investigated as a fatal, in coma for 30 days in ticu, not looking good for making it 2 more months in intensive, 28 surgeries, hospital bed for a year, wheel chair for 5 years, was told I would most likely reamain in a wheel chair for the rest of life not ever walk, was told I was way to optimistic about where my life was headed, I told them I do not give up. I will walk, be independent, I will work and volunteer, I cannot tell yoi how blessed I am, the man upstairs was not ready for me, it took me 10 years to get back up, I knew exactly what I wanted to do when I was able, I wanted to join the legislative process for reform, I wanted to be a voice for those who did not have one, I wanted to help educate the public in a non judgemental way, Military Bases, High Schools, work place environments, etc. I worked at and voluteered at an out patient alcohol and drug treatment facility, because my belief system is if someone has an addiction disease, we should not put them in a jail cell or prison, we take them to a doctor, I forgave her, b4 I met her, she came to my home 5 months later to apologize, she had a black out, .24 bac, did not remember doing it or even seeing me, we cannot allow for our durable medical equipment to be taken away, I had to rent a hospital bed, when I was done with it at the end of that first year, I asked them to come pick it up, they said we do not want it, I donated it to a friend whose husband who was in the last stage of ALS, I donate all of my prosthetic parts to my prosthetic doctor, there are always people who nerd it. My life is wonderful🤗

Rehab technology is needed, it's not a luxury. Don't cut funding, find your cuts elsewhere!

If we went after those cheating the system, we would have more than enough money for those who need it! Don't cut funding, prosecute those who abuse it! Including your congressional colleagues!
